ENCINITAS, CA — The giant sinkhole on Lake Drive in Encinitas has grown as rain continues to hit the San Diego area, ABC 10 reported .
The already large sinkhole on a cliff in the Cardiff area of Encinitas grew bigger after more than an inch of rain fell Friday, March 10, city officials said Saturday, March 11.
The city took to social media early Friday saying that they were working to stabilize the sinkhole before the upcoming rains.
With rain continuing to fall and the sinkhole continuing to grow, the work to fix it will take longer, and is now slated to run through April, the city said in a news release.
The sinkhole is on the western shoulder of Lake Drive, between Wales Drive and Sea Village Way, in the vicinity of a 48-inch corrugated metal pipe that takes runoff from the road to the bottom of a canyon.
"As part of the repair process, crews relocated all utilities in the area, including gas, electric, water and cable," ABC 10 said. "Once those were moved, according to the press release, the work necessary to stabilize the sinkhole and give a safe area for workers began."
The city first learned of an erosion problem at the site on Jan. 17, according to a city staff report.
By the end of February, the sinkhole appeared. The city created a road detour and closed Lake Drive, with the repair work initially expected to take a month.
According to the city's news release, crews are working to "complete the shoring, reconstruct the embankment, rebuild the drainage inlet and reconstruct the drainage pipe, stormwater detention basin, roadway, and sidewalk."
